[i recently went on a cyber date with one of the blogosphere's hottest male bloggers, ben, from no ordinary rollercoaster. i'm sure you wanna see if i put out right? check it out ]

when i was on my insane laundry/cleaning spree sunday i had a particularly odd realization.

the laundry basket that i was using that still has my first initial and my last name written in sharpie on the bottom (in my mom's handwriting), i have been using for ten years.

my drying rack? ten years too.

the comb that i use everyday to get the tangles out of my wet hair when i get out of the shower, ten years as well.

those three things were bought when i was getting ready for my new life as a college freshman enrolled at the university of dayton.

that was august of 1998.

ten years later i still use some of those original back-to-school objects.

seriously, how is it possible that i, the queen of consistently throwing away perfectly good things has managed to hang onto a single white comb with purple tips that i bought from marc's in 1998?!?!

in reality the only other thing i'm still stuck with are the friends i met my freshman year of college, and maybe some old socks. of course i like the friends a bit more than the old socks : )

what kind of random objects are still a part of your life ten years later?

  1. I think the only thing that I still have from ten years ago are all my college books and papers. Yes, yes I was a nerd. I dread the day I'll have to go through those.

  2. I still regularly wear a shirt that I had my senior pictures taken in. I find this convenient because it reminds me that I will never be cool.

  3. I still have my pink pick from my first perm... In sixth grade.

Not shitting you. That was 1988 for those keeping track. Twenty freakin years.

  4. I still have my elephant stuffed animal, Wedley Ephelant. I've had him since I was 6 and I refuse to throw him out. He still sleeps in my bed, btw.

  5. I still have all the Beatles cd cases that I bought in high school. I have thrown out all my other CD cases and just kept the CD, except for those.

Oh I still have a dream dictionary that I go for my 18th birthday. The pages are yellow but I still use it.

  6. I still have first t-shirt I was given in marching band (yeah, I'm awesome). Its been washed so many times that its practically see through, but I can't part with it. The nerd in me won't allow it.

  7. Well let's see i was TWELVE 10 years ago..

sorry I just wanted to rub in how young i am...

Oh! I have this awesome old school harvard sweatshirt that I still wear every once and a while. I really wanted to go there when I was in elementary school.

And I still have my cat. She's like 15 years old.

  8. I still have dresses from college formals that will NEVER be in style again (in particular, an Asian-inspired number that looks like some cheap satiny prom dress they'd make on Project Runway). Never mind the fact that the thing would never in a million years fit me again. And it's red, which I look horrendous in. But, it's moved with me from college to Lakewood to Westlake. It really should be burned.

  9. oooh this is a fun one!

my OLDEST thing still around is my friend i met when i started 3rd grade at a new school. we're having a 20th annivesary party in a few weeks ;-)

i have a scroll with my name written on it in japanese script, which was done in about 4th grade.

i still have my beloved flannel from highschool.

not too much from college, though. i still technically have the ugly black plastic trunk that i brought all my shit to college in, but i don't really USE it much :-)

  10. Wow, I feel like a baby now. In 1998 I was in 6th grade. I DID have a shirt from back then, but I finally threw it out last summer. I don't think I have anything else from back then that I still use.

But, I'm sure there are things from when I started college in 2005 that I'll still be using in 2015.

    Okay, maybe several of them.

  12. I have tons of things, I just don't remember! I keep shipping them back home and my mom says my bedroom is full of boxes haha

Something I brought from home is my diary. I don't write in it anymore (I have a blog now!) but I had it since I was 8. It's kinda fun to reread it and see how much I've changed.

  15. That's so funny you bring this up. Just last week, our cleaning people thought they broke my vacuum cleaner. And I realized I've had that piece of shit for 10 years and kind of shrugged at the thought it might break. What else? My kitchen plates, bowls and glasses (which are going to the give-away pile after the wedding!). And I may still be using the same mascara wand ... (ha, I kid!).

  16. You, i have you 10 years later!

  17. I still wear my student of the month tshirt from 1993....so that beats 10 years. Do I win a prize? Cuz, I never got a prize for student of the month, other than a stinkin tshirt

  18. I was in 8th grade - so I made my best friend that year.

    And I still have her.

    That's about it. :)

  19. 10 yrs? Well, that'd make me 12... so I'd have to say a friendship bracelet. Out of the millions I made as a kid, I hung on to one that my very first best friend gave me. It's pretty ragged now, but I love it.

  20. ha, i JUST threw away one of those stackable thingys, you know, with drawers? that you stored random shit in in college? i had that going for a good 8 years. sick.

  21. I finally gave away a black shirt I had owned since middle school. 1992! And this morning it occurred to me that I sleep with a teddy bear I got in elementary school. I should probably wash that...

  22. I still have a pair of boxer shorts from 10 years ago.

Don't worry, I don't wear them anymore. But I can't bring myself to toss them.

After all, everyone needs an emergency pair.

  23. I'm a purger and throw away about a third of all my belongings every time I move. Not sure why.

I have a couple of killer CDs from 93-98 though. We really knew how to love our pop music back then in elementary, didn't we?

    Just me and Maxie?

    Oh.

    Nevermind.

  24. Ummm, I still have a few pairs of underwear from when I was in high school (circa 1997). Someone throw me a ligerie party please.

Also, I think my hairbrush is one I stole from my mom...which she probably purchased in the 70s. I've tried to replace it and always go back to the same one.

    Don't you feel better now?

  26. I still have some Birkenstock mules that I haven't completely given up on. I also slept in a pair of Big Dog boxers that I bought probably 10 or 11 years ago. The upside is those boxers actually fit. Of course, they are stretchy.

  27. I still have most of the desk supplies my mom bought me when I started college.

But, my iron from freshman year just died a few months ago. It was a sad, sad day.

  29. I am the exact opposite. I have a hard time throwing stuff away. If it has any sentimental value I have the urge to keep it. I can't tell you how much stuff is going to be thrown away when my parents move.

Oh yeah. I keep the stuff but stash it at the parents house. I don't want the clutter.

  30. I still have Revlon bronzing powder that I bought in high school. I was going to throw it away, but now...

  31. That would be my whole wardrobe and makeup and accessories...I've got to get with the times!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I am definitely the same way. I'm still using the drying rack and laundry basket from my freshman year, which began 5 years ago.

As far as stuff that's 10 years old, I have some REALLY old, disgusting sneakers that I pull out for events that I know are going to be messy. And an untangling comb that is at least 15 years old.

  33. I'm horrible. I still have clothes, that I still WEAR, from my frosh year of high school.

That, and a box of crazy notes from classmates that are a ball to read every few years.
