toe pick!

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

yesterday morning i almost ran the yuppie mobile into the car in front of me on my morning commute because i couldn't stop staring/laughing at a new billboard that was recently put up on the corner of st clair and w 9th.

this january cleveland has the honor of hosting the 2009 US figure skating championship. it's a big deal right? i mean, i have always loved me some figure skating - elvis stojko for the win!

of course there is bound to be promotion and advertising throughout the city leading up to the event - but seriously, who came up with this campaign? i need to thank them for my endless laughter each time i walk out of my apartment building.

this billboard is all sorts of wrong while simultaneously being oh so right. the style, the attitude, the sequins, and don't forget - that face.

what art director decided that this specific picture was THE BEST one?

hmmmmm, i wonder why male figure skaters get stereotyped as being gay?

according to this billboard sequins and the burning fire in this skaters eye, are exactly what it means to be a figure skater competing in the national championship.

1. i need to find out who that male figure skater is.

2. if this billboard was live action, i wonder what johnny sequins would be saying? or grunting for that matter. ew.

  1. Only one word can describe that face: FIERCE!

  2. i second that, it's what came to mind for me also, fierce!

and he would be saying..."rawwwwwwwr" unfortunately they don't show the hand gesture that goes along with the growl, that would've been a dead giveaway.

    it's so..blades of glory!

  5. Ha - you laugh, but that art director just got a few hundred extra impressions for freesies because you put it on your blog. And you admitted you walked away from it still thinking about it.

    That bastard won.

  6. Why didn't they cast him to play Edward in Twilight?

  7. FIERCE!

This would make my mornings a lot better.

  8. I saw one of those bill boards driving home from the West side the other day. As we were driving by I thought it was some sort of ad for a new "Zoolander" movie. The skater guy looks a little like Ben Stiller to me.

  14. I still dont understand that whole "for the win," or FTW statement.

    Where does that come from?

  15. That guy is twice the man I'll ever be.

  16. Sequins are supposed to pull in the straight men?

    ReplyDelete
  17. haha! I walked past that thing yesterday and thought the exact same thing, hilarious!

    Sequins. Period.

  18. There is very little that would make me watch figure skating.

    Perhaps Sasha Cohen naked.

    Yeah. That might do it.

  22. TOE PICK!! hah, great movie.

re: narm's comment - true, you mentioned the poster and it stayed in your mind.... but... i'm not sure for the reasons the ad director hopes, assuming his hope is that it makes people want to see figure skating :-)

  23. They should have just put LeBron up there so people go to see it.

  24. I *totally* think that guy looks like Zoolander too, Sarah and mob :)

  26. is it just me or does the guy look sort of vampireish?? maybe i've been reading too much twilight lately, haha.

but that billboard is pretty hilarious.

  27. Wow that is pretty funny. I love the intense look on his face and of course the eyeliner too. Who could forget that.

    ReplyDelete
  28. are you sure that's a male figure skater? He looks more vampire to me!!! (plus the art director knew he could appeal to the twilight fans)

  29. 1. I think SO@24 just actually gave us the guy's name, which is blowing my mind right now. I hope he had to google that.

    B. I adore all things sequin-related. And figure skating!

Also, my college town is hosting and/or just hosted a figure skating championship, so we must be about the same size market as Cleveland. Or something.

  30. Hillarious. I look at from my front windows.

  31. I don't usually comment but today I just had to...I am actually managing this event's outdoor advertising and all I can say is seriously get ready to be bombarded with this poster all over Cleveland in December! When I received this copy a week ago, I actually laughed out loud - They have commissioned a ton more posters just like this one haha

  32. tooooe pick! (i used to totally sweat that movie, by the way.)

and yes, that's quite the unfortunate representation of a figure skater. oof.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Are you sure it's not some Twilight tie-in called "Vampires on Ice?" I mean, they're cold anyway, might as well.

    ReplyDelete
  34. LOL I bet you anything that the text was mocked up that their graphic designer did while they were proofing and someone didn't get the joke ;)

    ReplyDelete
  35. I would have ran into another car or done something worse if I saw that billboard in person. It's classic!
