oops, i forgot the brown paper bag

tuesday night while at a fundraiser for the amazing providence house, i walked up to the bar and something unexpected happened...

i was carded.

to remind you all - i'm 28. i may act like i'm 22 sometimes but i definitely look my age, or so i thought.

upon getting carded i giggled and showed my ID while saying out loud awkwardly to the people around me, "wow, i haven't been carded in years!"

mmm hmm.

it got me thinking though.

how is it that i could buy jack daniel's lynchberg lemonade four packs, boone's farm strawberry hill and a 12 pack of red dog when i was the ripe age of 16 at the corner drive-thru but now as an adult was getting carded.

i mean nothing screams an underage drinker like boone's farm.

yet they sold it to me and my friends consistently.

looking back now i don't understand how someone could ever sell me alcohol. i didn't even have a fake ID till i was in college (sorry mom), and these shop owners blatantly sold alcohol and cigarettes to 16 year old kids with braces.

is it still this easy these days? gosh i hope not.

my future children are never leaving the house.

ever.

[editors note: happy 16th birthday to my little cousin jenna! don't you dare drink a sip of alcohol until you are 21 - or until you are at least in college and with me.]

[editors note 2.0: i was a good kid, didn't get in any real trouble just had friends whose parents were always out of town. teenagers experiment - i'm not condoning underage drinking. duh.com]

Hahahaha. I didn't try Boone's till I was 21. (For the record, I didn't drink until I was legal, so I started a little late...) And it was fantastic. I've moved on to bigger and better things now, though. No worries. ;)

It's a compliment to get carded, even if it makes you giggle. It makes me giggle, too.

Being carded always makes my day. Especially when they see how old I am and tell me I look younger than my age. I end up purposing right there on the spot.

When I get carded now, I just say, "Really?" And then they usually laugh and serve me anyway, because there is no way I'm passing for sub-21.

And we had a party recently where it was "High School Night" and I drank two bottles of Boone's Farm and a 45 of Colt 45. It was more disgusting than that sounds, somehow.

Ha. We used to have a friend at 16 go in to a pizza place and ask for 12 six packs. They'd look at this crappy ID and say, "Meet me around back"

Y'know, I was allowed to drink under age but I neeever felt the need for it.

Weird, eh?

There's one liquor store here that will sell to ANYONE. It's super awesome.

I mean not that I need it anymore, but 3 years ago it really came in handy.

Mad dog 20/20. That was my underage drink of choice.

None of my friends could stand the taste of alcohol in high school - so on the rare occasions we drank we'd mix 5 o'clock vodka with orange juice and thought we were pretty cool.

But no pitty is needed, I promise we found other ways to rebel and enjoy our youth... :-)

I got carded on Sunday at Champps... for a glass of wine.

And I am 31.

It never gets old or less awesome. Especially that one time when a clerk at BP said, "You don't look that OLD!" Yeah, um, thanks.

BTW, Snow Creek Berry was the shit.

had my first real taste in seventh grade with my sister and her gay best friend. Jack and coke. Yuck. I hate Jack Daniels to this day.

I got drunk for the first time my junior year of high school. And it wasn't pretty. I laid off the sauce then with the exception of special occasions like prom, new years, etc.

Then came college.....nuff said.

There were at least three opportunities for me to get carded last weekend, and I NEVER DID. I was so upset.

I get carded every once in a while and it usually annoys me, especially when the people carding me barely look 21. My friends and I used to buy alcoholic stuff at a local carryout too and never got caught.

we had two drive-thrus that worked every single time.

Jack daniels lemonade was also a fave of ours. Or, Zima with jolly ranchers.

i get carded a lot too. under 40 you know. But I still feel flattered. Who, Me? You want to see my id? tee hee.

I never bought anything illegally. Well, I use to stand outside the IGA and ask people to buy me cigarettes. I never could buy them though, I was always too chickenshit, and couldn't get away with it. They could smell my fear.

Boones. have you had it as an adult? its not so delicious anymore. *sigh*

Oh how this post hits close to home. Just last weekend, Sweets and I were buying one 6-pack of beer at the grocery store. They carded him, but would not sell us the beer until I provided ID, too (that NEVER happens at the store). We both looked at this lady cross eyed. Seriously? I mean, I know Sweets is younger than me. But, he's 32. And I'm 35. And we definitely do not look like we're 18. What's up with that?!

Rosemarie said...

Wow, red dog. I haven't heard that since I was 16 and buying it! That is nuts. I am also 28 now and your shopping list was what we bought in Salem, OH 12 years ago. That and marlboro light menthals. Thanks for the memories this morning!

Marie said...

I'm always carded. ALWAYS. I'm actually shocked when I'm not carded. Apparently I look like I'm 18. Good thing, I know, but come on people! I'll be 30 next year!

*sigh*

I drank when I was underage. But I didn't perfect it until my mid-20's.

I remember when I first turned 21 and loved getting carded BECAUSE I WAS LEGAL!! WOOOO!! But now it's such a pain. I'm all, "you actually want me to take OUT my wallet!?"

Mom said...

Alexa, what can I say.....too much info, again. I knew you were up to no good at Amanda's and questioned you many a times. They are told to card if someone looks up to age 35.... I on the other hand haven't been carded in decades, so enjoy it. Jenna, don't listen to ANY of this or follow by this example.XOXO

I rarely get carded anymore. Must be the gray in my beard.

I got excited when they stopped carding me at the liquor store near my house.

But then I got sad, because either a)I looked older now, or b) I am in there entirely too much.

lose-lose

sarahbelledotcom said...

carded? oh you americans are cute. you don't call it "ID'd?" hmm.
regardless. i've never been 'carded' unless i'm with a group of friends who've all had to show ID.
i think its because i'm tall. tall = elderly, apparently.

"i mean nothing screams an underage drinker like boone's farm."

You are so right.

Elizabeth said...

Hahah--I never bought the drinks when I was underage. I was far too paranoid for that, so I just paid others to get in trouble. I hate being carded even now. I always feel like I did something wrong, even though I obviously haven't.

Douchegirl said...

I NEVER get carded and I'm still underage. I look older than 20, apparently. My friends usually have me go into the liquor store and deal with the carding (I have a great fake) because they know I'd never get caught.

Kate said...

It's still that easy. Believe me.

rs27 said...

What's alcohol?

Katelin said...

i'm pretty sure i'm going to get carded for the rest of my life. most people don't believe that i'm over 17....i'm 24, haha.

brookem said...

boone's farm! now there's a throwback.
um, remember zima? malt bevs!

Alice said...

um, i'm still stuck on the corner DRIVE THRU. for LIQUOR. whaaaaaaaaa??

jessica maria said...

I always get carded! Oof!

...and never bought underage! Never had a fake ID, either!

So@24 said...

So do you know Relient K?

Melange said...

I ALWAYS get carded and nobody ever believes that I'm really 21 even after they see the ID. They pull out the ID book and everything. I get: "Wow, you don't look a day older than 16." I suppose I'll appreciate it when I'm old and still beautiful. :)

Megkathleen said...

I'm the opposite - I always get a little freaked when they don't card me. I mean do I really look THAT old?!

bethis said...

oh my god my parents were out of the town all the time too AND we used to drink red dog!! what the hell, who drinks that?!

anyways, I don't think it's that easy anymore. I don't know. Although my sister is 19 and gets wasted all the time. so maybe.

Anonymous said...

Oh, Alexa, Alexa.......I'm not even going to comment on what you were doing as a teenager, but as far as the carding goes......there are many places that HAVE to card you no matter WHAT age you look. This has happened to me on a few occasions and I am WAY past 21!
