money costs too much

Monday, January 19, 2009

normally my monday post is a recap of my weekend actives, but i had different plans this past weekend.

the only thing i wanted to do this weekend was NOT go out, stay in and save money.

see, i have a lot of fun events coming up (detroit, jumpback ball, nyc, concerts, weddings, etc), and instead of funding these trips via my credit card i figured that if i stayed in this past weekend and this upcoming weekend i could save a few hundred bucks bankrolling at minimum the detroit trip.

in theory this was a great idea.

unfortunately though i don't think it's in my DNA to not spend money.

thursday night, for those of you who follow me on twitter and have read my last blog post know that i went out drinking - pretty hard in fact.

i ended up spending $75 on thursday, not exactly saving huh?

friday night was a bit lighter on the wallet because bird, the klutz and i checked out the movie bride wars at tower city while sneaking in a food court dinner - classy indeed - but i only spent $15.

saturday night muffin and i had a date planned to check out notorious at crocker park and grab some dinner afterwards. dinner at hyde park prime steakhouse and the bottle of wine that accompanied it probably wasn't the best money saving decision but i had fun - i also spent $60 in the process.

so while i theoretically "stayed in" all weekend not going out like a rockstar i still somehow managed to spend $150!!

i give up - this experiment was a huge FAIL.

i don't know what to do. i'd ask you all for tips but i already know the answer to that question - don't go out and spend money.

but what the heck am i supposed to do? sit at home and twiddle my thumbs?

sigh.

but shifting gears onto something extremely rad, the over 4,000 members of 20 something bloggers think that this little blog here is the best up and comer blog, (started in 2008). holy crap i don't believe i won!! my amazing blogging peers voted, and i'm so proud to have received the award.

many congratulations to all the winners and finalists!

what a great way to start the week, hopefully it'll help me forget about my lack of financial willpower
.

  4. YAY!! Congrats on winning. I am so excited for you.

When I have those weekends that I stay in so I don't spend money I end up shopping online. It is not possible to stay home and save money.

  7. I know what you mean! Last weekend we were supposed to keep it inexpensive & laid back...we ended up at three different bars and not home until 4:30 the next morning...*sigh*...what are we to do, not enjoy our twenties?! ;)

  8. Congrats on your totally well-deserved award!! Teh WIN!1!!
I totally hear you on this one. My recommendation is to host Girl's Night In, and invite people that maybe haven't met each other before. Everyone can contribute something - a dessert, some bread, a salad, a couple ingredients for a main course, BOOZE - we made some kind of awesome healthy turkey, mushroom and spinach lasagna, and it was really fun hanging in the kitchen working and talking and laughing and drinking together.

Keep the booze flowing and break out the board games. It's a totally awesome and affordable (for every one) time!

My advice on how to save money? Marry someone rich.

Then you dont have to worry about this.

As far as spending money goes, I think it's in my blood too! There are some things in life you just can't fight.

  11. Woohoo! Congrats on your award!

As for saving money--one of my best friend and I decided to quit spending money by going out all the time to -- so now, we meet up at her house, I'll bring stuff to make for dinner or dessert and she will have the other...then we watch movies or tv shows from our DVD collections, play rockband or something on Wii, or play board games. We used to go to dinner and a movie all the time...now we just go to a movie and skip dinner. I've saved a couple hundred dollars just since the beginning of the year.

  13. saving money is hard. I had more money saved when I made $10 an hour and was stuck in cash advance than I do now. And I don't feel like I do much.

It crosses my mind for a second to move home to save money, but that passes really fast. I think that thinking about saving is almost as good!

not sure what it was about this weekend, but i had no desire to get crazy. <--- that doesnt happen often.

  16. Congrats on the award - and oh my gosh! I guess I've been lurking for sometime - but *awesome* design!!

My tips for staying in are library books, volunteering, learning to knit, working out at home, and taking a lunch to work.

  17. Congrats on the award. So weird, I just wrote a very similar post (instead of my usual weekend recap). I went on on Saturday and spent more than I wanted, but overall I am not doing anything because I need to save.

  18. Was the movie The Bride Wars any good? It looked hilarious in the previews, but it got horrible reviews.

I would say stay in and eat and then go out and party like the rockstar you are. At least you'll save money on food.

  21. Wonderful work :) *big hug*

As far as saving $$ goes, it takes a huge amount of self control and discipline -- I struggle with this allll the time. . .

  23. Congrats on the award!

So, you can't stay in, but you really shouldn't be spending money, right? Why not make a game of it. This coming weekend, allot yourself $25 for Friday night and $25 for Saturday night. Spend it whatever way you wish. But, once it's gone, you gotta become creative. Get guys to buy you drinks. Talk the bouncer out of the cover charge. Beg for money a la The Amazing Race. Do what you gotta do to get the job done. I bet you can do it ... and I'll bet you have fun, too!

  24. Congratulations!

About the money, I've found that setting a budget for the weekends has really helped me to cut down the weekend spending. It sucks sometimes, but it's certainly worth it in the end.
