anchovies

eggs

in my opinion i think anchovies make everything taste better, specifically pizza and real caesar salads.
what sucks is that no one likes anchovies but me, meaning i don't get to enjoy my favorite pizza topping unless i get
when i decide to get fancy with my pizza i enjoy the incredible edible egg on my pie. i first became aware of the pizza topping from chef jonathan sawyer when he was at bar cento. i could go as far as to say the sunnyside pizza at bar cento was life changing.
it's true, i'm that dramatic when it comes to pizza. life changing people.
which is why i'm excited for the first annual cleveland pizza week going on march 9th to 13th.
the rules of cleveland pizza week are simple:
1. gather some friends
2. eat pizza
3. repeat
it can be a fancy shmancy pizza or a single slice from panini's at 2am, just make a point next week to eat to get out and support your local pizzaria.
the plummy award (i just made that up) for non-chain pizza in cleveland are angelo's, maproom and pizza by robert (that one's for you poo poo). the plummy award (better the second time?) for chain pizza is donatos - hands down.
for more information about cleveland pizza week check out their facebook page or follow them on twitter @ctownpizzaweek.
so to my fellow clevelanders:
what's your favorite pizza place in town?
and to my non cleveland readers:
what's your favorite pizza topping? (someone please tell me they like anchovies as much as me and i'm not a canned fish eating freak)
ooooh favorite toppings... spinach, artichoke hearts, pesto, buffalo mozzarella, cilantro, barbecue sauce/ranch dressing....
ReplyDeleteok, now i'm hungry. and i'm very curious about this egg thing - looking into that soon :)
I like cheese. Straight cheese homey.
ReplyDeleteI'm keeping it simple on the pizza so I can get complex in the bedroom.
huh?
My favorite topping is ham on white pizza. There was a little shop nearby that had "chicken cordon bleu" pizza.. with chicken and ham and cheese and a cream sauce. Sooo yummy. But they closed :(
ReplyDeleteI'm really very sorry to say, but looking at those anchovies kind of makes me sick to my stomach. BUT, in your defense, I've never actually ever even trieeed them, so, who knows - maybe I would? But I have a texture issue, and I just feel like they would be horrible to me. My loss, anchovie lovers gain <3
ReplyDeleteOh, and my favorite toppings are pepperoni & tomatoes, or pineapple YUM
Confession time: I have never actually tried anchovies. I've had eggs on pizza (breakfast pizza) but never on a normal tomato saucy-one. So do you scramble them, boil?
ReplyDeleteMy favourite pizza toppings are mushrooms and oregano, hands down.
Ooooh, reminds me of last night pizza! I finished one all by myself - hadn't had pizza for soo long, forgot that it taste so good!
ReplyDeleteI had jalapenos on my pizza. That was delicious. Yum.
I feel like having another, damnit!
Must.Eat.Healthy.
Repeat mantra.
Anchovies on anything = eiwwww! But, at least I'd stick to my diet that way. Maybe we should go eat pizza together sometime. =)
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I have a favorite pizza topping. I have particular taste about crust (thin), sauce (red) and cheese (not too much). But a favorite topping? Well, mushrooms are one of my favorites, for sure.

Yes and yes. Anchivies and egg on pizza is sublime. If you come to Chicago, Josh and I will eat anchovie pizza with you and you will not have to be alone.
ReplyDeleteMy fave non-chain pizza place is wayyyyy out here in the west side suburb of North Ridgeville. It's called Petey's Filling Station. (Gas station themed bar/restaurant... sounds weird, but it's acutally cute)
ReplyDeleteAnyhoo they have great pizza.
And I have to give it up to Donato's for their chicken mariachi pizza being like crack to me.
I don't like this post, because I gave up pizza for Lent.
ReplyDeletei'm definitely a pepperoni person. i can handle mushrooms, sausage, ham, bacon, and chicken on my pizza, but if i had to eat one topping for the rest of my life, it would definitely be pepperoni.
ReplyDeleteBest pizza in town is at Lolita in Tremont, hands down. It is very similar to Bar Cento but I like the crust at Lolita a little better. My favorite is the pork belly, pickled green tomatoes, chilies, & tellagio. Simply amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe thought of anchovies turns my stomach.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pizza is one from a local place down here -- it comes from a tray, is square thin crust with a tangy sauce, pepperoni and shredded mozzarella on top but not melted.
Apprently only people who have grown up with this pizza love it.
I love Carmino's pizza over in Old Brooklyn. I'll have a large pizza with pepperoni, green peppers and pineapple please :)
ReplyDeleteI had pizza yesterday. The only thing missing with it was a beer. Unfortunately I was at work and could not score one.
ReplyDeleteFavorite topping would be cheese, tomato, cheese, peperoni and then some cheese.
ohmigosh- Did you just quote Home Alone?
ReplyDeleteAnd you know what? I've never eaten an anchovy in my life. But you're making me want to try them. For pizza though, I'm generally just a cheese and pepperoni girl. I figure, why mess with a good thing?
Mushrooms and black olives when it comes to a run of the mill delivery place.
ReplyDeleteIn Detroit, we've also got several bars in the downtown area that serve yummy pizza with goat cheese or pesto or whatever other high-end ingredients you can think of. And those are kind of fabulous.
Meatlovers. I don't do vegetables. Or anything else for that matter. Cheese and meat only!
ReplyDeleteI'll try just about anything but I'm not much for anchovies...but I adore a good pepperoni/onion/pepper pizza!
ReplyDeletehahahahah - one of hubby's favorite movie is Home Alone, lol. He uses the phrase, "I'll give it a whirl" all the time (a la Kevin and the Stouffer's mac n cheese).
ReplyDeleteAnwyay.... favorite topping? Imo's pizza (St. Louis style) with whole slices of bacon, onion, and sausage. DROOL.
This post just decided for me what I'm having for lunch! My favorite topping is pepperoni. Come to NY for some real pizza! Only kidding...kind of :)
ReplyDeleteMy all-time favorite is pineapple on pizza. Not the Hawaiian, with ham and pineapple, JUST pineapple. And extra cheese, of course. Mmm...craving...
ReplyDeleteI'd really like to try anchovies on a pizza. I don't know that Jeff would try that, though! What if we hate it? Do you live close by? Can we give it to you? (ha!)
ReplyDeleteI don't know if you're a Futurama fan, but check out the episode "A Fishful of Dollars". Fry buys the last can of anchovies on earth (they went extinct).
May I suggest bacon on your pizza. Yummy. I have never had pizza with anchovies before and something tells me I don't want to.
ReplyDeleteanchovies?
ReplyDeleteI wont be splitting a pizza with you anytime soon.
favorite topping?? pepperoni and pineapple.
ReplyDeletehands down, yo.
The only place ive eaten in cleveland that they didnt have in akron...is Nunzios. I think it beats guiseppi's (and not much beats guiseppis) Of course the few times ive had it i was totally trashed and everything is so delicious when you are drunk....
ReplyDeleteMy fave topping if I have a pizza all to myself is a double cheese, onion, green pepper, and black olives.
No meats. no fishes. no egg (wtf?)
Uhm. I think I'll stick to pepperoni. Because..eggs? Seriously?
ReplyDeleteYucksters.
I have never heard of eggs on pizza...I think that I will be steering clear of that one.
ReplyDeleteIf you ask me, all pizza needs is some extra cheese and a lot of pineapple...and it's even better if reheated for breakfast the next morning. Yum!!
Yeah egg is a new one for me too, boiled, fried? I dont get it
ReplyDeleteI love anchovies and most of all I LOVE Mascapone cheese as a topping....
To clear up the egg controversy, the eggs are served sunnyside up, hence the name of the pizza, Sunnyside. It is awesome. Tons of pancetta, black pepper and gooey egg. Don't knock it until you've tried it. Have you tried egg on a burger yet? Also amazing!
ReplyDeleteI'd be willing to try the egg on the pizza (egg is amazing on a lot of things when done right), but I can't get behind you on the anchovies. They make me go bleh.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite pizza is one served by a pizza place by my mom's house: veggie pizza made with the following toppings - olives, mushrooms, avocado and cashew nuts. I know. Cashews on pizza? But OMG it's amazing. Smother it in ranch dressing and you've got my favorite thing in the entire world.
dave - the egg burger during lolita's happy hour is the best burger i have ever had. EVER.
ReplyDeleteto everyone - you guys gotta give anchovies a chance people! pro anchovies!
I am from Cleveland. I like Cafe' Aroma, Players in Lakewood has pretty good pizza too. As far as chains go--I love Romeo's Pizza.
ReplyDeleteYou're awesome. Wish I could go get pizza with you. The 2 am pizza sounds good for an insomniac like me, no?:P
ReplyDeleteHere, here!! Robert makes a bomb pizza. Mama Santa's dang good too. It is pizza week every week in my world.
ReplyDeleteoh woman... i wont hold the anchovies against you ;)
ReplyDeleteI'm going to have to disagree with the plummy award for best chain pizza...Dewey's rocks my chain-pizza world. But! I do love Angelo's!
ReplyDeleteLove the pizza at Bar Cento! But ANCHOVIES!! Blechk :)
ReplyDeleteEggs absolutely gross me out--there's no way in HELL that I'd ever put them on a pizza!
ReplyDeletePlease tell me your not talking about pizza in anywhere other than NY. It's blasphemy.
ReplyDeleteI freaking love all things salty. So me and anchovies are BFFs. I never can order them either b/c no one wants to smell them let alone eat them.
ReplyDeleteSausage is my favorite! On pizza, in this case, but ... you know. And I do like anchovies, but moreso when they're in things like puttanesca.
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge fan of Hawaiian as long as it's Canadian bacon... thank goodness B likes it too, because no one else ever seems to. Dorks.
ReplyDeleteOMG, I could seriously eat pizza until I puke. I'm in!
ReplyDeleteWTF I WANT PIZZA WEEK HERE!! wah. but omfg yes, anchovies AND eggs. aw yeah.
ReplyDeletemy overall fave is pesto pizza. just pesto sauce (instead of red sauce) and cheese. YUM YUM YUM YUM YUM.
Sausage and mushrooms. My boyfriend hates mushrooms so this makes things problematic.
ReplyDeleteI like egg! and really anything...but no fishes! sorry.
ReplyDeletecalifornia pizza kitchen is my jam. do you guys have one there?

I think one of the reasons I moved out of Fries & Schuele was because it was just WAY too convenient to hop on downstairs for a Sunnyside pizza. Seriously, I would walk in the door and Eddie would put my order in. My name is Ann and I am a Pizz-a-holic.
ReplyDeletei'm more of a hawaiin pizza lover myself. but an egg does sound interesting, i would try that one, anchovies though...negative.
ReplyDeleteKnow what makes everything taste better?
ReplyDeleteMe.
I really like pineapple on mine, sands canadian bacon. I can make it on the cheap by putting Dole tidbits on a cheese pizza.
ReplyDeleteyeaaaa I'm sorry I'm not with you on the whole anchovies thing... I think the creepiest things I like on pizza are shrimp and mushrooms.
ReplyDeleteWhen I think of anchovies on pizza, I immediately think of the Ninja Turtles. I didn't know that non-turtles actually ate pizza like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm a total hater and can't even handle FAKE anchovy in my caesar salad dressing. For pizza, I'm a huge fan of New Mexican green chile, naturally, and also I love tomato and pineapple. YUM.
ReplyDeleteWe just had this conversation at the lunch table at work yesterday. Bar Cento's sunnyside pizza is AMAZING! I have to go with that as my number 1!
ReplyDeleteI love anchovies. LOVE them. And I love you more because you love tiny, salty canned fish too. It's not real Caesar dressing unless there are anchovies. Fresh anchovies grilled with lemon are amazing. I don't care if they were the butt of every joke on Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, I still love them.
ReplyDeleteAnd eggs, a fried over-easy egg improves all things. Particularly a BLT but I could definitely see pizza as well.
Other favorite toppings: spinach and roasted garlic. Potentially some kalamata or nicoise olives. Opa:)
Yum, yum!
ReplyDeleteMy fave toppings:
artichoke hearts, pesto, buffalo mozzarella with fresh basil,
ham with pineapple and a white goat cheese pizza... add some smoked salmon and capers!

You're making me hungry and I *just* ate lunch like 30 minutes ago!
ReplyDeleteHmmm, have you ever eaten Guy's Pizza (coventry, aurora, etc.)? They also have GuyZones (aka calzones) that are pretty much amazing :)
ps - I'm definitely down with anchovies (salt!) and eggs. Garlic (of course) and prosciutto are also quite lovely*
I have bought Guys Pizza by the slice before. Pretty good, but the pizza elitists in my neighborhood don't seem to like it.
ReplyDeleteI am going to try anchovy pizza within the next week, I promise!!
PS: I <3 EGG
I have to admit, I can't read your blog at work anymore since you changed format b/c some of the pictures are blocked and all I get is balck scree and white outline. Stupid, stupid work.
ReplyDeleteBut I ate pizza today in your honor :)
Anchovies are much like the Red Army's plan to salt the earth and render land unusable: they destroy everything that once brought forth joy and food.
ReplyDeleteHowever, any non-piscine meat is just fine by me, especially prosciutto, meatballs, or bacon. I think I could have a heart attack just writing that sentence. Also, I tend to put hot sauce on pizza, because I'm ridiculously in love with Frank's Red Hot.
Pepperoni and onion most, but mushroom on cheese is a close runner up.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the boyfriend hates mushrooms, which, judging by your commenters, is a fairly regular occurance.
Girls, let's get together and eat mushroom pizza SANS boyfriends!!!
I love many, many pizza toppings but if I have to choose just one I will go with goats cheese. It's so creamy and delicious and it doesn't clash with any other toppings, it enhances them.
ReplyDeleteSunnyside Pizza at Bar Cento = best pizza I have ever had.
ReplyDeleteLolita Burger (with egg) during happy hour = best burger I have ever had.
Conclusion: Egg on pizza and burgers is incredible.
I just came across your blog and I am loving it. You have me hooked. I am originally from the Cleveland area as well. I have to have mushrooms and extra cheese. Ugh, I am so darn hungry right now! Long story. =)
ReplyDeleteI will split an anchovie pizza anytime. Although I don't know you and don't live in Cleveland, but those are just minor details.
ReplyDeleteGIRLLLLLL I just can't. I can't be in the club!
ReplyDeleteI wish I could tell you that I'm in your gross canned fish club, but I just can't!
ReplyDeleteStraight pepperoni girl!
x
After reading this post last Thursday I had a major craving for pizza. For the first time ever, I tried my hand at homemade dough. It was AWESOME! The dough was half wheat, and toppings were: sauteed onions, spinach, red sauce, fresh roasted garlic, pineapple (key for me) and mozzarella cheese. It was seriously fantastic, and quite healthy. Thanks for the inspiration :)
ReplyDeleteMy fav is the Gourmet White pizza from Mellow Mushroom. That and throw in their spring water garlic parmesan pretzels... HEAVEN!
