no screaming for excedrin here

Wednesday, May 6, 2009

considering today is only day three of the shred i'm still how you say, sore.

so this morning as i
literally rolled out of bed because it hurt to bend and or use any muscle in my body i popped an aleve to try to suppress the pain and i limped to the shower.

hours later i think taking the aleve was a complete joke -
zero pain relief.

which is continuing to prove my point that i have been stating for years that no over the counter pain medicine works for me other than advil (ibuprofen).

there's a bit of a back story to this theory of mine though, you see my mother is a pill pusher - but not the
good kind of pills.

she pushes excedrin which she believes is a "MIRACLE DRUG!"

to my mother excedrin is the cure for everything...

have a headache (THIS BIG!) obviously it's going to scream for excedrin

tired? my mom tells me to take an excedrin (because there's caffeine in it!)

hungover? take an excedrin

stub your toe? excedrin

bronchitis? excedrin

leg amputation? excedrin

they must pay the woman money for how much she pushes it on people.

but to me taking an excedrin is like popping a smartie, a pez or eating a jelly bean - it does absolutely nothing but increase my chance for a cavity. i've told my mom that it doesn't work for me FOR YEARS but she refuses to believe it.

she has drank the excedrin kool-aid - the woman doesn't stop.

but then again i've drunk the advil/ibuprofen kool-aid - it's my goto drug. i seriously think i'm immune to every other OTC pain reliever. i don't even know why i bother to take anything other than advil - it's a waste.

maybe i'm doing something wrong?

does anyone else have this problem with excedrin? what's your go to pain reliever? (and i'm talking over the counter here we all know "the good stuff" works...)

  1. Maybe Benadryl? It never stops or numbs my pain, but it always puts me to sleep in the fetal position immediately. So I always take it before long drives. Naturally.

  2. It's definitely ibuprofen for me, too Alexa. But what I want to know is... how are you liking the 30-day shred? I know it's painful, but is it good stuff? I'm considering purchasing it, but have a hard time doing DVD work outs (except for Tae-bo, which I hate to admit, but I love).

  3. Alternating cold and heat on sore spots. I take aspirin if I need it.

Hippie answer: Arnica gel or Calendula. You could drink Willow Bark tea (aka aspirin) or Catnip tea (Catnip is good for hoo-hoo cramps, but also other muscular cramps). Get the health food store catnip, don't mug a kitten.

  4. I'm an ibuprofen girl, tried and true! All the other stuff doesn't work for me either.

And Jillian Michaels = GENIUS. I lost 10 pounds in one month by putting her DVD into my workouts two or three times a week. I can only imagine what every day for a month would have done!

  5. Hey, at least she's not trying to push windex on you! ;)

Tylenol relieves my headaches and nothing else ever has.

Aleve relieves my period cramps. I use to use motrin but that stopped working for some reason.

Full body massage when I need my physical sanity back. Only medicine that works to relieve an achy body!

  6. Advil is the only thing that works for me, too! What gives?

  7. Whenever I do take pain relievers, I always take ibuprofen.

  8. i'm usually more of an advil girl myself but i may have to use excedrin now if it's that awesome, haha.

  9. I don't take legal drugs. Kidding, kidding.

I'm TOTALLY with your mom. Excedrin is the way to go. I have a HUGE (i think it's 500) bottle on my work desk.

  10. I LOVE EXCEDRIN. I take it for everything too. Right on, STEPHO!! I prefer Excedrin Migraine. It is a miracle OTC.

  11. Whiskey is over the counter. So is gin.

I think all pain relief pills are just placebos - even your precious advil.

    ReplyDelete
  12. advil girl here too! i like the gel ones... for some reason i think they work quicker or something.

    ReplyDelete
  13. gel advil or ibuprofin as a plan b.

also, i'm on day 8 of the shred, and trust me, it doesn't even feel like working out anymore, though i remember (fondly) days 1-4. because i couldn't move. anything. it hurt to breathe. i swore i broke a rib or 8 and that every muscle in my body was overworked and needed to just lie down...for...a little...

but then jillian would show up out of nowhere and start jumping on my stomach telling me i would never be able to accomplish anything if i didn't do this. lazy ass.

i still dream of kicking her in the kneecap someday.

  14. I can only use Excedrin for headaches. I like the excedrin migraine for a really bad headache. Other than that it's all advil/ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is better for muscle pain/aches. Just remember never to take more than 2,400 mg per day (which is the same as taking 800 mg motrin/ibuprofen 3 times per day which is prescription strength)

  15. Ibuprofin. I take three if it's really bad.

  17. My mom does this, too! She thinks Excedrin will solve the world's problems. It doesn't work for me at all.

  18. everyone is doing this damn shred. it makes me feel like a lazy fatty.

i hate that i get a pop-up for this shred thing everytime im online.

anyhow, theres an award for you to be picked up at my blog.

    happy shredding.

  19. I don't know about regular Excedrin, but Excedrin migraine is the shiz-nite. Just don't take too many or you'll get the shakes.

If all else fails... I.V. gin.

  20. For muscle pain I only take ibuprofin.

  21. I'm an ibuprofen fan to. But I never buy Advil anymore. Long ago a Chem professor let me in on a little secret, generic and name brand drugs are the exact same thing, So generic it is.

I'm also doing -The Shred- and i promise after day 5ish you don't hurt all day long.

  22. Your mom is onto something. I just recently discovered the wonders of Excedrin. Let's just say life is much more pleasant now.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My mom is like that with water. She thinks any sickness can be cured if you drink water.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I agree - Excedrin does nothing for me. My go-to drug of choice is Advil Cold & Sinus. BUT, it HAS to be the kind you get from the pharmacist with the actual psudophedrine in it - where you have to give your license and your first-born child up to get a box.

It is so totally worth it. :) Nothing else works as well for me.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha. I totally use excedrin for headaches. I use aleve for muscle aches, but that's about it.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh I have such a love affair with Advil! As for the Excedrin? All it does for my migraines is hit me with so much caffeine that I feel sick to my stomach and can't sleep for the next 18 hours. Which usually results in another migraine. So, you know, it's a WIN WIN drug.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Actually, Excedrin is my OTC drug of choice. No doubt. Doesn't *always* work, but depends on the pain I have. I get nasty sinus headaches, and then I hit up the pharmacist for some good stuff behind the counter.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't use "drugs"

I just use a plain ole budweiser and a shot of JD.

    Cures all the pain.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Advil's what does the trick for me too! It's my go-to med.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oooh Alexa, you make me laugh! I should have known someday you would write about our on going dispute. I still hold my ground! It is the caffeine too. But too much of any of them aren't good for your kidney's.

  31. I grab the aleve as well. I love that your mom comments on your blog. =)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I pop advil like tic tacs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'm an excedrin pill pusher too. I get awful migraines and the only thing that works for me is excedrin migraine. I take them like they're candy. They're awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Um.. excedrin!!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Ibuprofen all the way, baby.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm totally an advil girl. But it just because it's what I'm used to, and it works for me. Plus, candy coating? Brilliant. But any kind of medication kicks my ass. I've zero-tolerance for pills. Excedrin would probably kill me.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Your mom and I must be at the same punch bowl, because for headaches, I'm an Excedrin girl all the way. But, for all other aches and pains, I go to Alleve. Sweets made me do it in the beginning and that shizzzz actually works!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I take ibuprofin, like, rite aid brand too I dont even take advil. especially from working out!

Other than that, the morning relief alka seltzer works too because its fast!

keep up the fabulous work with Jillian!

    ReplyDelete
  39. i am very very specific about what i like for what types of maladies. excedrin is the only thing that helps me hungover. and when i have cramps, the ONLY thing that works is aleve.

i have a large stash of both in my medicine cabinet.

    ReplyDelete
  40. excedrin migraine!!!! it is seriously like crack to me because it really does relieve EVERYTHING!!! i'd probably die without it.

    no lie.

  41. Is your mom Chris Rock's mom? Oh wait...that was Robitussin. "Let that 'Tussin get down to da bone!"

    ReplyDelete
  42. My mom is an Aleve pusher- she buys in in Costco-sized vats and it's the same thing - headache? hang nail? split ends? here take an Aleve and it will fix everything!

For me it's just good old Tylenol.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I like advil because it's coated in sugar.

And a tip for the working out- have you ever heard of a foam roll? It's like a noodle (the kind that you use in a pool) but more dense. You roll on it and it stretches out your muscles like you wouldn't believe. I used it in physical therapy for my knee problems. Anyway, it is good for loosening your muscles, which in turn, will make you less sore.

    ReplyDelete
  44. excedrin extra strength is definitely my miracle drug, I totally agree with your mom. i have cronic headaches and it's the only thing that works. then again, i only take pain meds when I have a headache, not for a toe ache or tooth ache.

    ReplyDelete
  45. My roommate was a total Excedrin addict - popped the stuff like candy all the time and was never without a GIANT bottle in her purse. I've never been into Excedrin like that (although it was nice having someone who always had the goods.) I kind of prefer Tylenol or Advil - sometimes for me I feel like it's more like a sugar pill anyway - I just believe that if I take something it will go away and eventually it seems like it helps. :)

  46. This is just a random observation, but I feel like I've heard about 50 different people say they're starting the 30-day Shred and then less than a week later, I hear that they've taken a few days off. I'm not accusing you of such, but is success even an option? :)

I alternate between Tylenol and Advil, mostly because I always seem to have it around without ever buying it. But seeing all these shout outs for Excedrin kinda makes me want to go buy some.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm a fan of Excedrin, as well. Motrin is another go-to.

My boy swears by BC Powder. I have NO idea what's in it, but he uses it to overcome hangovers and aches and pains.

    ReplyDelete
