i've always had a thing for astrology.
i also interpret dreams, and read my horoscope daily (i'm a cancer). numerology intrigues me, and when i was in college my friends and i would make nights out of me reading everyone's tarot cards.
my book shelves are filled with a mixture of chick-lit, music books, dream dictionaries, astrology and numerology books.
i'm in no way a medium, but i can't shake the fact that many of my "dreams have come true". i've been to a psychic, and while i think many of them are full of crap (ahem, miss cleo, ahem), i truly believe that a percentage of them really do know what they are talking about.
there's just something about trusting my gut feeling, my intuition and instincts that have never steered me wrong. i'm also slightly superstitious, am undefeated when it comes to predicting the sex of a baby, and i know that mercury rising isn't just a bruce willis movie.
i've played mash and silly fortune games my whole life for entertainment value. i mean who doesn't want to know the name of who they are going to marry in the 7th grade? so far i'm marrying, ben, bob, brian, brett and brandon - and that's just the B's.
last night while at the maproom with some friends the triangle/square piece of paper fortune teller thing came up - yes, that's the technical term for it. just see below to know what i'm talking about.
as we were making it, well, page and lara were actually making it because i don't know how to fold it correctly, we were coming up with some excellent "fortunes" like...
-make out with the jerk
-bone a bum for 10K
-split your pants
-get laid tonight
-have your pinky toe fall off
now i know that the paper "fortune teller" is a funny little game, but the other stuff i mentioned? i can't help but believe a little bit, it intrigues me.
so do you believe in astrology, interpreting dreams, numerology, etc? or do you think it's all just silly fun?

When my dreams are good, I totally believe they mean something. When they are bad, I chalk it up to just a silly little dream. Same with astrology and numerology.
ReplyDeleteThat's totally the way it works!! :)
maybe its a cancer thing cause i'm totally into it. for example yesterdays horoscope...
ReplyDeleteYou're a maestro at orchestrating swinging social situations & this ability comes into play in some particular ways right now. Whether it's planning a surprise party or some other kind of celebratory event, you're able to combine the elements in such a way that it will delight & astonish everyone who attends. Don't be afraid to call upon others to help in make sure your plans come to fruition. the more the merrier!
and see, we hung out.
no lie.
I have notebooks filled with my dreams and once drove to FLA to visit my family because months before the vacation was even planed I dreamt I was in a plane crash on the way to visit them...and in the dream the date was the same week and the airline was the same that randonly my wife was picking.
ReplyDeletei'd hardly say 'making out w/ the jerk' qualifies as an 'excellent fortune.'
ReplyDeleteI'm totally into astrology but I'm more skeptical when it comes to the whole psychic medium thing. I don't doubt that there are people who have some kind of gift but certainly not every person who rents a strip mall space and buys a neon sign of a palm.
ReplyDeleteHave you heard of Sandra Leigh Serio? I remember watching her on one of the morning shows as a kid. She's an astrologer and my mom went and had our star charts read by her when I was like 12. A lot of the things she said back then have been freakishly dead on.

I believe in interpreting dreams, since I've had a lot of deja vu experiences, and dreams that actually come true. I even think deja vu experiences have saved my life a couple of times, by taking the path different than what I did in my dreams.
ReplyDeleteI'm totally not into the horoscope thing though. It's very inaccurate. None of the stuff that is claimed to happen in my horoscope ever happens.
As for astrology and numerology? I haven't really looked into them enough to make a judgment.
I check my horoscope everyday (I'm a Sagitarrius!). I can't tell you how many times it's been true, so yeah, I believe in that.
ReplyDeleteInterpreting dreams? Most definitely. Whenever I have a dream I write it down and I've got a couple of dream books.
Numerology? Not really. But the other stuff really does intrigue me.
Yes numerology astrology are fun and entertaining and sometimes a little true...dream interpretation is your unconscious talking to you...so sometimes you need to listen.
ReplyDeleteI know you know this but if you get pulled over with an expired driver's license you will lose your license and that would totally suck so I would do that ASAP...esp since you have a history of tickets :)
I'm a cancer too and I totally believe in all that stuff. I think it is sooo amazing too. There are some real weirdos...but there are also some true psychics, etc...I have some pretty cool stories to back it up. I love that your into it too! YAY
ReplyDeleteOh yeah...I wanted to tell ya that I made your watermelon salad...to die for!! It gives you such a fresh feeling and good breath!
ReplyDeleteIrish background. My mom and I are always looking for hidden meaning and signs. ALWAYS.
ReplyDeleteShe always has to leave through the door that she came in. I can't even remember why anymore.
I never remember my dreams, so it'd be hard for me to interpret them. And as far as the other stuff goes ... it's not that I'm a non-believer, I just don't have the patience to spend time on it. Or to care.
ReplyDeleteI definitely believe that some people have a 'heightened sensitivity' for things we cannot explain!
ReplyDeleteIt's all for fun! But I think dreams are a way for your unconscious to dig up stuff that is bothering you or you may be thinking about.
ReplyDeleteAre the answers mutually exclusive?
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing back memories. We used to do the triangle/square piece of paper fortune teller thing *all* the time when we were kids.
i do believe in it to some degree! i think it's fun, if nothing else!
ReplyDeleteoh 'the triangle/square piece of paper fortune teller thing' LOL I totally know the name of it- but its completely slipping my mind, ugh this is going to drive me nuts now! LOL ...well... its always fun! :) lol
ReplyDeleteI don't really buy the whole astrology thing, but I am open to other stuff- like dreams? If you told me you had a dream come true, I wouldn't think you were crazy.
ReplyDeleteI see it as just a curiosity...a way of playing with people's minds...of f**king with their heads if you want to be blunt...
ReplyDeleteOh, and I played MASH in elementary school, and somehow I always ended up living in the shack, married to a goat, working as a garbage man and driving Sanford and Son's junk truck...
I am also very interested in dreams too. I have a maaaaasive sized dream encyclopedia and friends are always wanting me to interpret certain dreams. I'm also a cancer so maybe it's part of our nature. =)
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me that I have a dream from last night to interpret.....
I believe in it all to an extent. I'm not TOTALLY convinced, but I think there's something to it all.
ReplyDeletefound you on 20sb, and love your blog!
ReplyDeleteWe always called the paper fortune teller a "cootie catcher"!
Although, in 4th grade it told me I would have a boyfriend by the end of the week, and that soooo didn't happen :)
i WANT to believe it, but there are so many asshats peddling your fortune who clearly are just making up what they think you want to hear. a friend and i went to get tarot cards read once, and the woman gave us the EXACT SAME reading, despite having different cards - it was clearly the "mid-20s, unmarried female" fortune. and she did this while both of us could hear the other's fortune being read... like we wouldn't notice they were identical..??
ReplyDeleteYou know, I'm not all *cosmic* or anything, but I'm a true-to-the-word Aries, and every single love/sign compatibility I've read has been dead on...
ReplyDeleteI think the basic personality traits are for some reason very telling by your sign... obviously people born at the cusps tend to share from other zodiacs, but whatever... that shit is true!
I definitely believe in some of that stuff--I believe in ghosts and things of that sort, so that's not too far off the mark for me!
ReplyDeletei used to love those fortune teller games, best distraction ever, haha. and i sort of like to believe my horoscopes, i check it every once and a while and it's usually not too bad.
ReplyDeleteI went to a psychic once, when there was a festival on campus. I figured it'd be bull, but he was so spot-on with so many bizarre things that no one could just, like, intuit from my body language. I went in so skeptical, and then at one point he said to me, "You have a spirit who watches over you. She's a little girl. You never met her & you're not technically related to her, but you feel like you are. Her name starts with an L."
ReplyDeleteMy faux-uncles' sister was murdered when she was 9. Her name was Lorna.
I freaked out.
I do believe at certain thing pr two that a fortune teller said. No logical explanation to this, they just do sometimes. I try not to take it seriously though or else i'd freak myself out.
ReplyDeleteI love astrology!I'm a libra, and even don't check them every day - I do check them. I'm also intrested in dream interpretation. Had one intresting about my x the other night, would have loved to know what it ment.
ReplyDeleteI don't always believe in it, but I'm curious about reading it. I definitely relate more to the Virgo sign than the Leo. I'm on the cusp. Yes, I'm special
ReplyDeleteI loved playing that game when i was younger and of course i loved mash too. There is nothing wrong with reading your horoscope daily, i do it too. It's funny that every person I know that is a scorpio like myself is very into reading their scope daily.
ReplyDeletedo I believe in psychics?
ReplyDeleteNo. But I do believe in the power suggestion.
I think that is all being a psychic is.
Awww... I remember when all the girls used to play that game when I was a kid.
ReplyDeleteMy boyfriend thinks I'm a fucking nut job, but I totally believe in my dreams, and think astrology is fairly accurate. Plus, I'm really good at predicting things---I tend to be really intuitive. Crazy? Maybe. Care? Not at all.
ReplyDeleteNot huge on astrology and horoscopes and stuff. Mostly because it involves "learning stuff" and I don't really like to do that.
ReplyDeleteBut I do believe in karma. And she is a bitch. An awesome one.
I am kind of into the whole palm reading thing :) it's super interesting.
ReplyDeleteAnd, I totally agree with LiLu -- karma is for real and she does not mess around*
xo,
Kelly
this reminds me of the south park where the boys steal the girls "future telling machine"
ReplyDeletethose things are so fun. We also would make them and put little specks inside, and then rub it on peoples heads and tell them they had lice.
I was so freaking cool.
that game brings back memories.
