i bought a new pair of black flats last night to replace a michael kors pair that i wore so much i literally got a huge hole in the sole.
i'm a hobo apparently, one step away from duct tape.
so i hit all the major department stores in beachwood mall looking for a new pair. after trying on about 26 styles i ended up with an affordable pair ($80) of black flats by arturo chiang (who i had never heard of).
i completed all the standard flat shoe testing, walking, skipping, jumping, falling, socks, no socks and the always important running man dance.
the shoes passed with flying colors so i handed over my trusty debit card and bought them - mine all mine.
excited to wear them this morning i took them out of the bright orange box and slipped them on with my standard little black dress for work.
and i walked.
by the time i got to my car the black flats weren't as comfortable - but that's ok, they just needed to be broken in right?
kept walking.
when i got to my office i noticed that the rubber soles squeaked and made a weird noise on my office's wood floors - annoying.
still walking.
went on a client meeting and while taking a tour of their facility the heel blisters started to form.
wasn't able to stop walking.
so now as i sit at my desk with my uncomfortable brand new shoes - i shake my fist in the air.
i hate shady shoes that lie to you in the store boasting of their comfort only to turn into uncomfortable rude little monsters once the sale transaction has been complete...
kind of like marriage or puppies. (i've heard)
ugh, why is it so damn hard to find a pair of comfy flat black shoes?
recommendations welcome as long as "easy" and "spirit" aren't in the brand name.
Rocket Dog Memories Thai Silk Knotted Flat
ReplyDeleteI bought them back in July (http://majalisblooms.wordpress.com/2009/07/07/little-black-shoes-the-sequel/) and I have loved them with an everlasting love.

ReplyDeleteSam Edelmen - Clement flat
So comfy and they are on SALE!!!
I borrowed some flat shoes from my mom last weekend because all mine were either high heels, uncomfortable or deteriorated. Turns out, hers made a farting noise when I walked. Very embarassing.
ReplyDeleteThese shoes cost 300 fucking dollars...let's get 'em!
ReplyDeleteI hate (read: heart) you for putting that in my head. I'll be singing it tonight while stuffing my face with sushi!!!!!
I read this entire thing in the "voice" of the teacher from Charlie Brown.
ReplyDeleteClarks (no not kidding) or Blowfish. Love both.
ReplyDeleteWhat stores need are a variety of virtual walking environments:
ReplyDeleteYou can "walk around" in your shoes while in an office, on the sidewalk, doing the walk of shame... whatever you usually would do in those shoes.
I am on the search for the same thing. Please letme know if you find a pair. I've taken a couple pairs back to the store completely deflated after thinking each was "the one."
ReplyDeleteI seriously hate it when that happens, it's so not cool.
ReplyDeleteCole Haan shoes with Nike Air. You will never want to buy anything else!! Try to find an outlet by you. I just bought a pair that was 60 percent off. From $230 to only $90!
ReplyDeleteKenneth Cole Reaction, they're black patent leather pointy toed flats. They're amazingly comfortable, and I think I paid $35 for them at DSW.
ReplyDeleteAh... and there in-lies the big shoe MYTH! A GOOD shoe should NEVER need broken in! And may i recommend ANYTHING by Antonio Melani OR OH DEER! Both FANTASTIC in looks AND function!
ReplyDeleteSneaky shoes are the worst. I have a pair and they're SO CUTE...but I can't really wear them.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who wonders why in hell they can't just make shoes comfortable AND cute at this point? I mean, I can do all my banking from my phone and you can't seem to understand that if you make the back of a shoe hard as a rock it will hurt my feet and I will curse you and your first born? Really?
Oh, also, this is why I bring them home and clean the kitchen or vacuum in them. Then you know about the sneak attack without wearing them out, so you can take them back.
ReplyDeleteAlso, it forces me to clean stuff.
I can't seem to find any shoes anywhere these days! It's so annoying....especially when they're uncomfortable! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I like Easy Spirit shoes sometimes. They used to have this mock boot that was actually adorable and SUPER comfy... then they stopped making them.
ReplyDeleteI can't help you with the black flats, I get all mine at Payless and balk when they're more than $20. What can I say, I'm cheap.
I'm guessing Keene, Teva and flip flop also should be skipped over? I've got nothin' darling.
ReplyDeleteI sit here in my black ballet flats that i've worn to death--earlier this week i super glued most of the sole back on both shoes. just so i can get a few more wears from them. They're steve madden's and i love them. However, i havent seen the same style.
ReplyDeleteI did find these: http://www.zappos.com/steve-madden-tama-black-leather
which seem to be almost identical to the ones currently slowly dissintegrating on my feet.
black flats are hard to find.
oh yah, i love rocket dog shoes too
ReplyDeleteOk I have told you time and time again.....in the breaking in period a little footie is often needed. I have even bought some for you. Try them....you'll like them. XOXO
ReplyDeleteTory Burchs. Totally over priced and totally worth it.
ReplyDeleteJust saw a comment for Rocket Dog shoes as I was about to say the same exact thing. I'm totally wearing a pair right now (but they're sneakers, with no laces - score! - and brown plaid...I'm not very stylish).
ReplyDeleteI'm wearing these right now and although I dealt with the blisters at first (so frustrating!) I hit this point soon after where they are the most comfortable flats. Better to wear socks with them though. :-)
ReplyDeleteI hate that! I wish I had a suggestion, but I don't... all my flats hurt at one point.
ReplyDeleteI find 5 inch heels are more comfy than flats.
ReplyDeleteDon't look at me like that.
Oh man I struggle with this too when I buy them. I join you shaking my fist in the air.
ReplyDeleteI've found wrapping my feet in bandaids and cling wrap prevents the pain. The sweating is ridiculous but comfort is found this way.
ReplyDeleteMadden Girl Heavenly Patent flats. Seriously, best flats I've ever owned. They tend to run a 1/2 size big so order up. I just purchased a shiny red pair and replaced my blue pair that have stretched out after months of abuse. Available at dsw.com at a fantastic price!
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of Kenneth Cole black flats that I found on sale at Marshalls a few months ago that are the most comfortable thing I've ever warn. Plus, I have trouble finding shoes without laces because my feet are so narrow and these fit perfectly!
ReplyDeleteI would assume they use the same comfy sole stuff in all of them...maybe you could find a pair you like at DSW?
I tried to find the pair of Kenneth Coles I had until my whore of a sister stole them and stretched them out, but I can't find them online. They were great though. I'm with everyone else who said DSW. I need some new black flats too, so if I find a new perfect pair, I'll let you know.
ReplyDeleteGood god to a feel you sister. I have nearly sworn off of flats completely having decided that I must have ill-formed feet that will not play nice with this style of shoe. Hate those damn heel blisters.
ReplyDelete.....I used duct tape on a pair of flip flops I wore so much that had a hole in them.....
ReplyDeleteHa - your mom is right about the shoe liners (my mom says the same thing...) But they slip and end up showing.
ReplyDeleteI use BodyGlide http://www.bodyglide.com/ on my feet before I put the shoes on (use it where you would get blisters). Works great - I'm a cheapskate and go for quantity over quality in my shoes and it makes all manner of "cute but made of crappy manmade material" shoes blister free.
currently sitting at MY desk crying over the excatly same issue. black pointed toe flats from urban are the devil and my baby toes hate me right now. seriously someone is going to have to carry me through my next client appointment. * (tear) :(
ReplyDeleteJust keep walking in them, it usually takes more than a day to break in new shoes.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, I've had my black flats for a year and they're still not comfortable.
Eff.
Couple of years ago I bought black flats from a brand called Mushroom. I'd never heard of them either but I was in a rush and didn't even try them on. They are now worn so badly that the sides are cracking and falling apart but OOOHHH so comfy. I got them at Mervyns when they were still in business.
ReplyDeleteWHO ARE YOU?
ReplyDelete16.99.
Black target flats. Best shoes i've ever owned.
So funny because I have been wearing holes in my own Michael Kors flats and have been having a hard time giving them up and finding new ones.
ReplyDeleteLet me know what you choose!
Ha- I haven't worn comfortable shoes in a decades. Beauty is pain, yo.
