don't you emoticon me

at times i like to think that i get along with men more than i do with women.

frankly, sometimes men are just more fun to hang around with - this is a fact.

but as much as i enjoy the non hassle that is a guy/girl friendship, i have one ongoing beef with the online male species.

9 times out of 10 i get really irked when a man uses emoticons in emails, tweets and online chats.

[ editors note: mom, an emoticon is a text representation of a facial expression - i.e. : ) ; ) : p or : ( ]

for whatever reason i think it makes the typer of said emoticon immediately less masculine and at times i feel that it is condescending to a woman.

for example:
"hey lady, you look cute today ; )" <----- GROSS.
"don't worry sweetheart i would never hurt you : )" <----- LIES
"it's 2am, want to come over? ; )" <----- JUST TELL ME TO COME OVER

gentleman friends, potential suitors, CLIENTS, please don't online wink or smiley at me, ever.

and if the smiley face is actually animated, or makes a noise? you're dead to me.

do NOT emoticon me.

am i bat shit crazy for even thinking this, let alone letting it bother me so much that i write an entire post about my hatred for men using emoticons?

so ladies and gentleman, what's your take on men using emoticons? yay or nay?

I am glad you gave a little definition of emoticon, I didn't know that word either!

And I think it is quite funny when used by males. If James used one in a text or email I would automatically assume it had been hijacked by a female.

I will take any wink -- in whatever form I can get it -- at this point. ;)

umm right there with ya sissy.. I once stopped talking to a guy because he used too many exclamation points in his text messages.. ha it's just weird when guys do it.

I love emoticons! It's one of my favorite apps on my iPhone! So there! :-P

Completely agree. Until they make an emoticon for "I'm doing bench presses" guys should never, ever use them.

I've actually never thought of this, but now that I do...yeah I still have no real opinion. If they do constantly, then that would irk me. But once in a while, meh, don't really care.

Nay to emoticons and nay to text speak. Only 15 year old girls can get away with that. 30 year old mes should use their words.

When I was on Match, I refused to talk to anyone who used emoticons in e-mails. With that said, I met my husband on Match and he hooked me with a sweet e-mail with a string of irreverant emoticons (knowing full well that I detested them). Now I don't mind them. But, I agree that they are still weird from guys.

I dont even use those acronyms like LOL or LMAO...

Thats how far I take it.

I HATE emoticons. Our inner-office web messanger autodefaults certain key strokes to turn into emoticons. So when I typed "enclosure (k)" referencing an enclosure i sent, the (k) transformed into an animated blowing kiss. I am still make fun of...a year later.

The only time I ever use them is on AIM if only because the laughing frog makes me crack up. Otherwise, I leave emoticons alone.

Thank you.

Thank you, thank you.

As soon as I read this, I thought of Lexa.

When it comes to guys I don't know...yeah...emoticons are shady but now that the boyfriend and I are well established, I know it's him trying to be cute. He doesn't use them a lot but if I'm having a bad day, the occasional :) def helps my mood when it's added in a text message from him.

But professional emails or anywhere else besides an IM convo? Yeah no, not so much.

The only emoticon B ever sends me is ~@~. Because he is a STRAIGHT MAN.

Go ahead, peoples. Type it in gchat... you know you want to.

I broke up with my first hs boyfriend because, when we were chatting online, instead of "goodbye" or "g'night" he habitually told me: "peace out."

You can probably guess how I feel about men and emoticons.

}:-(

ahahaha, i just did lilu's trick.
also, im mostly with you. im not wicked gung ho about it. overly done i think can be too much. here and there is okay with me.

Oh Alexa, thanks so much for the definition, you knew I would need it. But I wasn't alone, Georgia Peach didn't know it either! XO

I only like the cute colorful ones, but only a few at that. I have to say, the one on yahoo messenger with the guy puking cracks me up. I know, I'm weird!

The regular smileys, though, kind of drive me nuts.

I think men busing emoticons has a time and place. And it should be a rare occurance.

Susan said...

I think it's gross.

Liebchen said...

I'm trying to cut back on my own use of emoticons (I know, I know), but I still can't take seriously guys who use them.

What double standard?

i don't even know what an emoticon is. they are dead to me.

Andhari said...

Hahaha the usual smiley or casual wink are okay for me as long as the words aren't too cheesy. But more than that might creep me out. Especially if it has animation and make a sound, like you said. *shudder*

Why does everyone hate them with such passion? The bf uses them often and I honestly think they're sweet. Keep in mind he's a Boston Firefighter - the guy you would never expect to have texts littered with :) and ;) and :D

They make me smile because I honestly know he's smiling when he uses them.

Stop hatin! ;)
hahahaha

I think emoticons are cheesy but you know what? I always use them.... :) see? I can't help myself

Guys using emoticons is lame. I'm guilty of using them sometimes but I'm a girl so I can.

I also hate LOL and all that crap.

Katelin said...

i use emoticons but i totally agree that when some guys use it it's just weird.

PorkStar said...

I know now not to use emoticons when I visit your blog...

I'm an emoticon whore but... ok maybe not much so... ok none at all...

Shit, no wonder I don't often get replies.

Glad to know you put it out there for us fools to get a hint.

(feels like putting smiley here, but won't)

Take care

Emoticons? People still use those? :0

Bayjb said...

I know few men who do use them but yeah it would bother me too. Be a man, just tell me!

Mandy said...

I never really thought about it one way or the other. I'll be paying attention though the next time one of my guy friends uses them.

peterdewolf said...

You know, sometimes I feel like I have to use them, otherwise someone might take what I'm saying seriously and think I'm a raging jackass.

(When it is clear that I am only a normal jackass.)

SoMi's Nilsa said...

I think use of emoticons should be banned for anyone of legal age to vote. Seriously. Having said that, it's been kind of hard to break myself of said habit. =)

Kristan said...

I don't mind a simple :) or :( every now and then, but it's the ones that require interpretation, like 8{... or whatever, that seem like too much to me.

I don't think it necessarily emasculates a guy, but then again I am REALLY comfortable/familiar with the guys in my life who do it, so I don't know that anything they text/tweet could really affect my perception of them.

Clients, uh, wtf. It's called PROFESSIONAL communication.

Also: "and if the smiley face is actually animated, or makes a noise? you're dead to me."

SO TRUE.

I have mixed feelings about them but only because of who the sender is. I use them often (I'm famous for the "sticking my tongue out" face, which is =P in my book) but I also make that face often. I don't know. I guess it totally depends who sends them. If a hot guy wants to wink via emoticon, go for it, but my creepy next door neighbor? No thanks.

Idea #527 said...

I apparently somehow missed this post all together and can't figure out how!! Anyway, I think a wink is sometimes necessarily when said male is being sarcastic over text and if he didn't use that then otherwise I would think he was a BIG jerk. But that's the only one I'll accept!
