my typical work day attire is pretty casual. i get up, shower, throw my hair in a pony tail and walk out the door.

no make up. no contacts. it's a fairly simple process for me.

now, this doesn't mean that i don't know how to doll myself up...

when the time is right, i.e. when i know there will be cute boys around, i'll actually put make up on, put my contacts in, wear heels, etc.

i'd
like to think i'm the perfect combination of low and high maintenance.

but that's not the point of this post.

this past weekend when my mom was in town there came a point when i noticed her staring at me.

"what are you looking at?", i asked.

"you, and your glasses, and your sweats.", she said.

"and what's wrong with them?" i reply.

"i just don't understand how you go out of the house looking like that? have some pride!!", my mom said.

cue laughter from me, but my mom continues...

"your glasses are just unacceptable, i just don't know how you walk out of the house with them on!", she yelps.

a little background for you, i'm blind, like crazy negative 13 blind, i.e. my glasses, even with the ultra thin frames are ridiculously thick.

a little more background for you, my mom has almost exactly the same eyes, but wouldn't be caught dead wearing her glasses out and about like i do.

yes, those would be "ultra thin" lenses.

but i don't care about wearing my glasses in public.

i mean, would i wear them out on a date or to a wedding? definitely not.

but to work on a day where i have no client meetings and the only men around me are taken, there's no point in putting on mascara and showing off the girls - no need to be the office temptress here.

plus not putting in my A+++ appearance effort into going to work allows for one of my favorite life rules to come true.

the worse you look when you work(out) the better you look when you go out.

true story.

so, are you a primper? or do you just shower and go?

  1. I'm like you Alexa. I don't spend a lot of time getting ready in the morning unless I know it's going to be worth it.

  2. Lol - I love this!
I'm the same way with work - up and out the door in a half hour. I work in an office with 10 people, so unless I'm meeting a client it's pretty casual (no jeans, though). And I'm still the best dressed!!!! Haha.....

  3. I'm so happy you wrote this post, I could kiss you! OK, that might be a bit extreme, but you get the point.

    Two things:

    1. I have the SAME vision! My glasses are just as thick and I've worn them since I was one, so from about the age of 12, I've always, always, always worn my contacts!

    2. I have the same rule. In fact, I'm the only one in my office (there are four of us, all females, and I'm pretty much the only one who could care less what they look like while they are working. 99% of the time, we are stuck in an itty bitty office. I don't care if I'm not wearing heals; I don't care that my hair is in a bun; I don't care that I'm not wearing an ounce of making or that I'm wearing my glasses cause my eyes hurt. This is apparently a travesty to some. However, I just want to save up my time and effort for when I have someone I actually care about to impress.

    They don't get it.

  4. Primper pimp, yo. I think you already know that. Haha!

  5. my answer for this was pretty long, so i just made a blog post out of it. yeeeeup

but yea. i take un-fussy to the next level. ayeee-o.

  6. I love going to the grocery store in my sweat pants and glasses. Low maintenance FTW!

  7. i like to think i'm pretty low maintenance also. for running around town (errands, not the fun things), i'm about as low key as they come! sweats are so comfy, why not wear them as much as possible??

i haven't been able to go no makeup at work (there are a couple non-taken ones that i run into everyday, and they don't need to see me like that yet!). i don't spend a lot of time in front of the mirror in the morning. run the straigtener through my hair (or at least 3 days a week, i go with the pony tail) and spend about 30 seconds on makeup. little concealer and a little bronzer and i'm good to go!

and i'm in my glasses all day, everyday-- weddings and dates (ha!!) included!

  8. I feel like my mom and i have had the same conversation - she is typically appalled at how I look, and can't even fathom me going out looking the way I do. :)

  9. Ugh, I wish I didn't have to "primp" for work every day. But...A- my hair is not naturally pretty (crazy, wavy, not cute), B- too many outside people enter our organization every day (lots of meetings to attend, yuck), and C- I'm the back up media rep and of course some interview opp would come up the day I don't put in effort, lol. Ahhh, how I envy you!

  10. I don't leave home without some mascara, undereye concealer, blush and lipstick on - you never know who you'll run into and I just think everyone looks a bit better with just those 4 things! I could go on and on...yes, I'm on the higher maintenace side, but that's what makes Muffin!

  11. This year I went from working at a large ad agency full of pretty people to a small, five-person studio where I'm the only girl - and my time spent getting ready in the morning is absolutely cut in half. I used to wear heels to work every day, no exceptions. Now I wear them maybe once a week. My hair is usually in a sloppy bun/ponytail and the glasses are ALWAYS on! I definitely dress for girls, not guys!

  12. I wear ok clothes to work. But i really half heartedly straighten my hair, and put on my glasses and go. I workout on lunch and dont have time to "redo" myself anyway so id rather sleep in the extra time in the morning vs. waste time getting ready to only get sweaty and shower my hairdo out.

But im the same way when you go out its like a 2 hour process, and the glasses stay home!!

  13. I wear my glasses all day, every day ... should I be offended? I didn't realize they were so unfashionable.

But yeah, I'm like you. I can primp, but that doesn't mean I do it when it's not necessary.

  14. Geez..I can never say anything anymore. I have no idea what you might make a post out of!! You started the conversation about your glasses, missy, not me. Oh....and you spelled "heals" wrong...you were referring to shoes not doctors! Your payback! Ha....XO

  16. NEGATIVE WHAT???

I am a negative 9.5 and i have never met anyone with worse eyes than me. holy cow!!!!

and i wear my glsses all the time. my friends call them coke bottles. hahaha.

  17. Shower and go for sure. My stepmom says the same things to me. An actual quote: You should never leave the house without any makeup on because you never know where you're going to meet Mr. Right. And they wonder why I never visit.

  18. I'm with you - I shower and go. I wear my contacts most of the time, only because I really love wearing my sunglasses (and I can't do that over my glasses, obviously). But makeup is minimal, too, except for special occasions.

Also, I love your mom's comment. Sounds like something my mom would say.

  19. haha, i'm sitting at work right now with my unshowered hair in a ponytail and no makeup on. the only difference is i can't function w/o my contacts - while my eyes aren't QUITE a -13, they are a -9 with major astigmatism and i just can't see right with glasses. but the rest... yeah... :)

  20. Depends on the day, my mood, and how much time I have. Sometimes I go to work without makeup, but feel naked all day. The hair has a mind of its own, so I do what it tells me to no matter what day it is. I love getting all dolled up to go out though! And I love your motto. I'm writing that one down.

  21. I get ready every morning.

I don't wear Kim Kardashian make up but you never know who you are going to meet out - so I'd like to have my best face forward.

Now, my fashion sense is a whole other story...

  22. Depends on a few factors. How I feel when I wake up, and if I have anything important going on that day. I'm not a high maintenance girl though, even when I'm dressing up. Sweats 4eva!

  23. I admit, I'm a primper. But only because I teach 8th grade and they notice every little thing I'm wearing, comment on it, and remember the next time I wear it. I swear, if only they could remember what they read the night before like they do my outfits, I'd be Teacher of the effin year!

  24. I'm usually somewhere in between gross & gorgeous. I usually look almost exactly the same at all times...

  25. My glasses are as thick as yours. I absolutely have them on right now. Oh, and my hair is in a ponytail. My usual classes and teaching piano lessons routine doesn't require me to do anything special, so I've come to rely on the wonderful thing called "accessorizing" to make myself look less of a bum.

I do feel quite naked without earrings, mascara, and eyeliner though!

  26. I'm with Kristin...

Negative say-what-now? I'm -9 and seriously did not know it could get much higher!

My glasses are absurdly thick. I never wear makeup unless I'm going to weddings/company christmas parties. Holla.

  27. I have to admit I'm a primper.

I went through a phase towards the start of the year where I didn't care all that much (that being said, I still wouldn't wear my glasses in public) and then one day I realised I actually WANTED to make an effort and started dressing up and wearing heels and making more effort with my make up and hair again. And now, because I LIKE a guy in work I spend even MORE time on it.

But I do agree with the theory that NOT making an effort means you look even hotter when you DO try. Because when I'm actually going OUT, I look pretty much the same as I did during the week at work. Although I might be wearing SLIGHTLY more revealing clothes...

  28. My vision is negativ 11,5 and my the thickness of my glasses is very similar to yours-but I wear them 24/7 -where ist the problem? And to go to work has first to be practical-there ist not too much time in the morning...
