to bang or not to bang, that is the question

Thursday, January 20, 2011

i'm getting my hair cut and colored this weekend and i'm beginning to get antsy with my current do.

it's safe, it never goes out of style, it's extremely close to my natural hair color but with some low lights - i mean, i have long dark brown hair...

doesn't get much more traditional than that.

about 4 years ago though i maintained my long brown hair, but cut bangs - they started out straight and shorter and then i eventually grew them out to a long side swept bang.

i liked the theory of bangs but vividly remember not liking the maintenance of bangs, or i liked them for the first three hours after i took a shower but by the end of the day they were a greasy mess.

i don't have the thickest hair, so by the end of the day i found myself always pinning the bangs back because they weren't laying right anymore.

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut in looking at some old pics of me with bangs i'm contemplating wanting to cut some long ones again just for a change....

a picture of me taken a couple of weeks ago sans bangs - ya know, to give you something to compare to be fair.

i'm in the middle rockin' shorter bangs in a photobooth shot taken at harbor inn with jess and biscuit

this is me and georgia peach at the harp on st patrick's day '07

this is drew and i at my 27th birthday party in '07, the bangs were obviously starting to grow out longer to the side

so, what do you think?

should i cut some bangs on saturday or should i force myself to remember that i didn't always love them on a day to day basis?

decisions. decisions.

happy thursday, kids.

  1. I think all the styles look great on you. Personally on myself, I'm a fan of long side swept bangs. That way I can always have some variety -- bangs if I want them or pinning them back. Can't wait to see what you decide.

  2. BANGS!!!!!!!!!

I want bangs again, but with Gabe, I have absolutely ZERO styling time.

    Do it for me! ;)

  3. I say change it up ...I did the same thing. I hadn't had bangs since the 90s, then I got my hair cut about 3 months ago. Took some adjusting, but they're still driving me crazy. Eh, at least I tried something new.

I'm going with the happy medium of longer bangs swept away from my face.

Hey, DM me when you want to go to AMP150 with Zone! I have some gift certificates.

  4. While I love change and I understand how you feel (I've been feeling pretty bored w/my hair as well lately), I also have gone from bangs to no bangs a few times in the past few years. Everytime I cut them, I get so annoyed with them. Yes, they look uber-cute, but I have hair similar to yours (greasy bangs after like 3 hours). Is there something fun you can do with color or cut? Or just cut some whispy side-swept bangs?

Sorry to be the party pooper here. I vote no bangs.

  5. BANGS! They look great on you. I also have bangs and know exactly what you mean by not loving them at the end of the day. I have a cowlick that I fight everyday but I know that I love the bangs a majority of the time and I never leave home without a few bobby pins in case they need pinned. Go for it!

  6. I cut mine on an impulse because I wanted a change without losing my length. They are fun at times but overall I wish I wouldn't have cut them.

I would suggest maybe a longer bang that can be side swept so you don't have the frustrating grow out stage. I can teach you some fun things to do with your longer bangs so you don't get bored!

    Either way...you always look fabulous!

  8. While my usual answer to this would be yes to bangin, I think you rock the no bang look. :)

  9. You hated your bangs! Mine drive me crazy...always to the side and I even need them to make me look younger and cover forehead wrinkles! Try parting your hair in the middle sometimes first for a change, that's big now too. XO

  10. Bangs totally work on you! But I get the hesitation, I also have thin hair with a tendency to frizz and bangs never look good once I leave the house. Granted, I live in FL where the humidity is out of control.

I say go ahead and do it since it's winter. By the time summer rolls around you can have them grown out a bit and won't be sabotaged by the humidity.

  11. BANGS ALEXA! I just got some bangs myself after this exact deliberation. But I went with it and even though it took a a day or two to get used to them again, its a fun way to switch up our 'long brown hair' type of cut. And besides you can always grown them out to the side sweep (which I will do when the weather starts to warm up!)

  12. Bangs are nature's botox. And you are a girl in your 30's now...just something to think about.

I love my bangs---yeah occasionaly they are a pain but overall I like them. I think i've had them a few years now....I don't know when I am growing them out either.

  13. I like the sideswept bangs photo. When I wasn't sure whether to commit to bangs or not (for all the reasons you've mentioned -- I was traumatized by my childhood bangs), my hairstylist talked me into starting with sideswept and easing back into it.

  14. Growing mine out right now, for all of the reasons (cons) that you listed above. But you did look cute!

  15. YES to the bangs! They look great! :)

  16. Fringe! It's called fringe. (From what my hip hair peeps tell me, bangs are so 1985.) And I say go for some fringe - I think you'll rock it out!

  17. i vote no. you'll love them for about a minute and then be annoyed with them. i had bangs from age birth until 30 and i'm never going back!

  20. While you look fab in all photos, I think the bangs make you look slightly older.

  23. I got them recently, and hadn't had them since adolescence.
I hadn't realized how much winter hats ruin them. Seriously, my hair looks awful when i get to work and take off my knit cap.
I DO love them for the night life and pictures...but i wish i had waited until it was warmer before i got them.

  24. I really do think you look great both ways. I think at the last second when you're sitting in that chair, you'll just know what to do.

  25. Hmm, I don't know. I think you don't totally love the idea, you shouldn't do it...

  26. oh i say bangs, you look fabulous with them.

  27. I think you look great with bangs. I would go side swept to start and then go short. Time to mix it up!

  28. I saw on Twitter that you decided against bangs and it's something I've been debating for a while myself. A friend saw a pic of mine from college, it's actually my profile pic right now, and thought I should get bangs again.

Because I know what a pain they are to grow out I've been leaning towards no and then I remembered that I was sent some human hair "fringe" from the Jessica Simpson HairDo line. I'm going to take them to my next hair appt at the beginning of February and have them dyed to match my hair color so I can try bangs without the commitment. They have a less expensive version at Trade Secret. You can't color them but I hear they blend well. I was sent the blonde version of those so I can't really say.
