to lob or not to lob

Guys, I can't stop thinking about cutting my hair.

With recent articles like this one from NYT talking about the hair cut of the moment being the 'Chop' and this one from xoJane talking about the 'Lob' I'm seriously itching to make a change.

I've always been hypersensitive about my hair, it's long(ish), it's dark(ish), it is also very thin - the only thin thing about me - NO FAIR.

Not like falling out thin, it's just not thick, luscious and Kardashian like.

When it gets too long I think it looks stringy, which according to my very supportive and thicker haired friends, it's all in my head. But bitch please, I know stringy long hair when I see it.

But then there is the argument, of a short hair cut making people's faces look rounder - something I don't need. But then there is the other argument that short hair appears fuller because the length isn't weight it down - something I would love.

This is a Lob (long bob) - can I pull this off?

So I'm torn should I Lob it or should I chop it? Should I just STFU and keep my hair long and brown as it has been literally my entire 32.5 years on this planet?

Life is hard.

I have a hair appointment in two weeks, I need to make up my mind!

Happy Friday, kids.

  1. My hair is the same as yours, so I understand! Whenever I get a crazy idea to go crazy short (for me, at least), I have my stylist cut a bit longer - just in case I don't LOVE it. Maybe start with the lob, see how you like it in every day life. You can always work up from there.

  2. i completely understand what you mean about stringy hair. my hair is so fine and as much as i want it really long i always feel like it gets that stringy look. ive been tossing around the idea of bangs ... but again i want them thick and full and just dont know if i can achieve that look with said hair. i do tend to always ask my stylist if she thinks i can really pull something off though!

  3. Haha I saved the same exact picture of Heidi Klum to give to my stylist next weekend! My hair has gotten so long - longer than it's ever been - and it's fun and pretty but it is weighing me down, literally and figuratively. I found some photos of me from a few years ago where my hair was shorter and I remembered how shiny and healthy it was, and I'm going for it! DO IT DO IT!

  5. The good thing about hair is it grows back! Even if you don't love it, you can change your style again in just a few months. Go for it. You don't have anything to lose!

  7. I think you would look lovely with the lob!
I chopped mine off to chin length back in 2008 and have been growing it out ever since-- In that time, I've done long bangs, no bangs, short bangs, blunt bangs--- change is good. Go for it.

http://thebeautydepartment.com/ is doing some features on face shape and the right hairstyle for your shape-- maybe that can give you some insight and get your more comfortable?

  9. i absolutely love this haircut, and i have incredibly fine hair as well, i think you should go for it...the good thing about the lob is it's not going to take all that long to grow somewhat out if you don't end up loving it. i also say throw in some bangs, any kind, they grow out and a change, as i see shibani saying above, is really good for us all sometimes.

  10. As someone who took the plunge just yesterday, this post couldn't be more timely. Plus, from your description, we have very similar hair! I think the problem I was having yesterday after getting it done was that I didn't (and never really seem to) like the way my girl styled the cut - today after styling it myself, with my product, etc., I am liking it much better...I am still a little freaked out by it, and may add some shorter choppy bangs, but either way, I am happy for the change. Go for it! We can be LOB-by friends.

  11. I need to do something like this too. My hair is so long and thick and I hate washing it....it is a mess. But, I think I look stupid with short hair.

  12. Cut it! If you're thinking about it enough to write a post, then you'll regret it if you don't try. Plus, it's only hair and it'll eventually grow back if you decide the cut is not for you.

  14. I'm a little surprised that the "chop" has become a thing, but I'll take it. Actually just made an appt for a haircut because I wanted something similar (but w/side swept bangs). The plan is to take off around 10 inches and donate it.

But I think the "lob" would look great on you. The version on Olivia or Heidi would be perfect.

  15. I'm a little late to the conversation and am just echoing what has already been said here but I really think you should cut it. I had ridiculously long hair for years and actually found I like a shoulder-length cut more for my face (even when it's on the fuller side). And a nice sweeping side bang is a great look, especially if you're not used to wearing bangs and want to ease into it.

    It'll look awesome!

  16. I have thin hair too! Lots of it, just lots of it that is fine. I cut it on a whim two years ago right above my shoulders & I loved it. It looked healthier & thicker. Unless you are getting a mom-cut it isn't going to make your face appear rounder...IMO. Go for it. It is just hair & it will grow back.

  17. Well the length isn't that much different from your hair now, just a bit angled in the back. My advise is to just not cut it too short in the back that you can't pull it back in a ponytail because you won't be a happy camper in the long run. Is this also including a longer side bang as some pics have? Just a reminder.....the only time you had shorter bangs you were not a fan. Just food for thought. :)

    1. I totally agree about the pony tail! I say chop it but keep the pony possibilities.

  18. Go for it! I had basically the same haircut since high school and just chopped it. Everywhere I go I get compliments. No one ever complimented me on my hair before! Chop or lob, just do it! :)

  19. I say do it!! Your face is heart-shaped, not round, so you don't need to worry about that, plus you're not talking about getting a very severe short cut, just a long bob. I think it'll look great.

My hair has grown now after this year not being able to get it cut properly abroad (boo hoo) but about 3 years ago I had my long hair chopped off into a bob. I knew I needed a change and I used to get so many compliments after I got it cut (I think mainly because it was shorter and so I HAD to style it every day as opposed to being lazy and just tying it up! lol)

  20. go for it! be daring while you are still young!! i love anistons style the best, but then, she's been running the market on stylish do's for almost 20 years, right?

  21. You should Lob! I was told by a hairstylist that people with thinner hair or more likely to pull off a Lob or Bob/wedge.

  22. DO IT! Ok, I'm not exactly the best person to ask. Cause I'll try and convince everyone else to cut their hair, but I'm scared to do it to my own hair. I'm terrified for the same reasons.

  23. You would look great with a lob!! (or at least based on all the photos I've seen of you). I'm headed to the salon in 45 minutes, and I have no idea what I'm going to do to mine -- but the lob isn't a bad idea!
