You can learn a lot about a person based on...

Wednesday, January 25, 2017

They say you can learn a lot about a person based on the car they drive, where they went to college, the zip code they grew up in, Myers-Briggs type, yada, yada, yada.

And while the descriptors above provide a fair amount of context (Volvo S60, University of Dayton, 44709 and ESFJ), I have a new favorite get-to-know-you question.

Actually two questions, that I've been using interchangeably.
- What radio stations are programmed in your car?
- What's on your DVR?

What I actually enjoy most is when someone says, "I don't have a car" or "I don't have DVR," because then you can take the conversation a million different directions.

But for the purpose of this post, I'm going to share my answer to the first question, because you can tell a heck of a lot about a person's interests based on what they listen to in the car.

Let's set the stage: I love my SiriusXM Satellite Radio and I would be lost without it.

Alexa's Sirius Radio Programmed Channels (in no particular order):
1. Jam_On - Jam Bands
2. SiriusXM FLY - Hip-Hop/R&B from the 90s & 00s
3. Howard 100 - The Howard Stern Show
4. Entertainment Weekly Radio - Entertainment talk and news
5. Business Radio - Business powered by Wharton
6. Grateful Dead Channel - Grateful Dead 24/7
7. NPR Now - NPR News & Conversation
8. '90s on 9 - '90s pop hits
9. Classic Vinyl - '60s & '70s Classic Rock
10. Radio Andy - Andy Cohen/Pop Culture

Based on the above, one could gather that I'm a foul-mouthed, liberal-minded, business woman who would be equally starstruck meeting Missy Elliot or Trey Anastasio and has seen every Golden Globe nominated movie and television show.

I'm totally on board with that description.

Your turn. What are you listening to in the car these days?

  1. I have a 50 minute commute via bus and train (or bike and bus during warmer, sunnier weather), so I listen to a lot of Podcasts. I also read my daily WSJ, usually while listening to music because I can't read and listen for comprehension at the same time.

Here's my must listen, in some rough semblance of order, pending what's been unlistened to longest:

    1. SANS Internet Storm Center Stormcast - listen to this every day walking to the bus
    2. Big Picture Science - wish there was more of it!
    3. NPR Fresh Air - I look, but only listen 1/3 of the time, depending upon guest
    4. Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! - love this show!
    5. Freakonomics - almost always come away with something useful
    6. Says You! - geeky puns? thank you sir, may I have another!
    7. Penn's Sunday School - skeptical agnostic libertarian loudmouth, what's not to love?
    8. Guys We F****d - a "unique" perspective on the other side of the jr high dance
    9. Coverville - hit and miss, but when it's a hit, it's a HUGE one
    10. Adam Savage's Tested - total nerd fest
    11. FiveThirtyEight - nerd fest goes politics
    12. NPR Politics - politics goes nerd fest
    13. NPR On The Media - media engages in some interesting introspection
    14. The Nerdist - nerd fest goes nerdier
    15. Savage Love - it's okay. whatever kink you have, there's someone that's REALLY messed up

  2. I am ashamed to say that I mostly listen to Top 40 radio when I'm in my car, & I don't even know the names of any of the stations because I'm not wedded to any of them. I had been listening to podcasts on drives - namely My Favorite Murder & The Shepod - but then I lost my aux cord, so... back to Top 40!

    1. HA! We need to find you a new aux cord pronto! Although, if we're talking about terrestrial radio, I do love the Alan Cox show on WMMS.
